A Workflow for Map Creation in Autonomous Vehicle Simulations

Islam, Zubair, Ansari, Ahmaad, Daoud, George, El-Darieby, Mohamed

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

The fast development of technology and artificial intelligence has significantly advanced Autonomous Vehicle (AV) research, emphasizing the need for extensive simulation testing. Accurate and adaptable maps are critical in AV development, serving as the foundation for localization, path planning, and scenario testing. However, creating simulation-ready maps is often difficult and resource-intensive, especially with simulators like CARLA (CAR Learning to Act). Many existing workflows require significant computational resources or rely on specific simulators, limiting flexibility for developers. This paper presents a custom workflow to streamline map creation for AV development, demonstrated through the generation of a 3D map of a parking lot at Ontario Tech University. Future work will focus on incorporating SLAM technologies, optimizing the workflow for broader simulator compatibility, and exploring more flexible handling of latitude and longitude values to enhance map generation accuracy.

Combining Cognitive and Generative AI for Self-explanation in Interactive AI Agents

The Virtual Experimental Research Assistant (VERA) is an inquiry-based learning environment that empowers a learner to build conceptual models of complex ecological systems and experiment with agent-based simulations of the models. This study investigates the convergence of cognitive AI and generative AI for self-explanation in interactive AI agents such as VERA. From a cognitive AI viewpoint, we endow VERA with a functional model of its own design, knowledge, and reasoning represented in the Task--Method--Knowledge (TMK) language. From the perspective of generative AI, we use ChatGPT, LangChain, and Chain-of-Thought to answer user questions based on the VERA TMK model. Thus, we combine cognitive and generative AI to generate explanations about how VERA works and produces its answers. The preliminary evaluation of the generation of explanations in VERA on a bank of 66 questions derived from earlier work appears promising.

The Seventeenth International Conference on Intelligent Environments (IE 2021): A Report

Interactive AI Magazine

Juan Carlos Augusto, Philippe Lalanda, Massimo Mecella Intelligent Environments are populated with numerous devices and have multiple occupants, inherently exhibit increasingly intelligent behaviour, support consistent functionality and human-centric operation (humans, as opposed to mere users, have increased requirements from a system, including, for example, intuitive interaction, protection of privacy, fault-tolerance etc.), and provide optimized resource usage. The development of Intelligent Environments is considered the first and primary step towards the realization of the Ambient Intelligence vision and requires input from research and contributions from several scientific and engineering disciplines, including computer science, software engineering, artificial intelligence, architecture, social sciences, art and design. The series of IE conferences have been consistently creating a unique blend of researchers in these disciplines, fostering cross-disciplinary discussions, debate and collaborations.

The Seventeenth International Conference on Automated Planning and Scheduling (ICAPS-07)

The Seventeenth International Conference on Automated Planning and Scheduling (ICAPS-07) was held in Providence, Rhode Island in September 2007. It covered the latest theoretical and practical advances in planning and scheduling. The conference was co-located with the Thirteenth International Conference on Principles and Practice of Constraint Programming (CP-07). The program consisted of tutorials, workshops, system demonstrations, a doctoral consortium, and three days of technical presentations mostly in parallel sessions. ICAPS-07 also hosted the second edition of the International Competition on Knowledge Engineering for Planning and Scheduling. This report describes the conference in more detail.
